Battle of the robots

UTM undergraduates once ability by winning Robocon 2005 at PWTC on 23 April 2005. That year’s victory was a hat trick after had won in 2003 and 2004. In 2003, UTM represented Malaysia to compete at the international level in Bangkok, Thailand and in 2004 in Seoul, Korea. UTM will compete in Beijing, China on 27 August 2005. This show that UTM won Robocon Malaysia for three years in a row.

ROBOCON, a national level robot building contest, jointly-organized by the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), and Sirim Berhad, was to select a team to represent Malaysia to ROBOCON at the international level, which was organized by ASIA PACIFIC BROADCASTING UNION (ABU).

The contest was opened to all public and private higher learning institutions, polytechnics, colleges and training institutions as a platform for the students to expand their potentials and skills in the field of robotics.

The theme for that year's contest was “Climb the Great Wall, Light the Holy Fire”. The two-day event was participated by 39 teams from all over the nation. In April 23, 2005 was the highlight of ROBOCON 2005, as the winning team, which would also represent Malaysia to Beijing to compete at the international level, was determined.

At the end of the round robin, 16 best teams would continue the challenge in the sudden death round. Subsequently, eight would be chosen for the quarterfinal. In the semi-final two of the four teams qualified were from UTM, while the other two were one each from MMU and UPM. The first semi-final match was between UTM TEAM 2 and UPM. In this match, UTM TEAM 2 managed to ‘climb’ in 1 minute and 43 seconds with a score of 28 to 0. The second semi-final between ARC (MMU) and UTM TEAM 1, a repeat of last year’s final saw the champion and the first runner-up competed against each other. Putting a very tough fight, UTM TEAM 1 was able to outmaneuver ARC (MMU) with a score of 13 to 6.

The exceptional ability of the UTM teams was evident when both teams qualified for the final. The final match between the two UTM teams was intense and UTM TEAM 2 managed to do the ‘climb’ within 2 minutes and 50 seconds.

UTM TEAM 2 did it for three times in 2 minutes 53 seconds, 1 minute 43 seconds, and 2 minutes 50 seconds. The most shocking achievement was by UTM TEAM 1 which managed to ‘climb’ in a record time of 50 seconds. This was also a record for the contest. As such, UTM TEAM 2 was announced the champion while UTM TEAM 1 the first runner-up in ROBOCON 2005, and the former would bring the Malaysian challenge to Beijing in August 2005 to compete in ROBOCON 2005 at the Asia Pacific level.

The winner of the contest went home with a trophy and checks of RM 10,000 and USD 100 while the second place winner received a trophy and a check of RM 5, 000. UTM TEAM 1 and UTM TEAM 2 consisted of students from the faculties of Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Shamsudin Hj. Mohd. Amin.
